3D Printing Practical Household Fixes: 5 Things I Printed That Actually Get Used

I'll be honest: my delta-style 3D printer is a dust collector most of the year. I don't print benchies, stormtrooper helmets, or articulated dragons. But two or three times a year, something breaks around the house, and I get to feel like a wizard when I design and print a replacement part that costs $0.15 in filament instead of $30 for a whole new thing on Amazon.

Here are five prints that earned their place in my house:

1. Cabinet Clip Replacement

The plastic clip that holds our kitchen cabinet door closed snapped after five years of use. The replacement clip from the manufacturer's website was $8 for a pack of two (plus $6 shipping). I spent 20 minutes in FreeCAD modeling a slightly stronger version with a thicker hinge, printed it in PETG, and it's been working for 18 months. Cost: about $0.30.

2. Bumper Spacer for My Mower

After bumping into a landscaping stone, my Ecovacs Goat 1000 had a cracked bumper mount. Not bad enough to replace, but loose enough to annoy me. I designed a spacer that fits between the bumper and chassis, printed in TPU (flexible filament). It's been absorbing impacts for two seasons now. This kind of repair — a 3D printed part on something expensive — is where the printer really pays for itself.

3. Cable Management Clips for My Desk

This is the most boring recommendation, but also the most useful. I printed a set of under-desk cable management clips in about 30 minutes. 4. Air Fryer Splatter Guard Ring

My Dreo air fryer tends to splatter grease when I cook bacon or burgers. I designed a simple ring that sits in the basket and deflects splatter away from the heating element. It took two iterations to get the dimensions right, but now cleanup is way faster. Food-safe filament (PETG) and design considerations (no crevices for bacteria) are important here — don't use this tip unless you understand food safety basics.

5. NAS Drive Caddy Insert

I swapped a 4TB drive in my Synology DS220+ and lost the plastic caddy insert. Synology wanted $15 for a replacement caddy. I modeled the insert from measurements and printed it in about an hour. It's not as pretty as the original, but the drive hasn't fallen out, and that's the bar. Free vs $15 + shipping.

What I've Learned

  • PLA is fine for most things, but PETG for outdoor/kitchen: PLA degrades in UV and heat. I use PETG for anything near a window, outdoors, or in the kitchen.
  • FreeCAD looks ugly but works: The learning curve is real, but once you understand constraints and sketches, you can model most repairs in 15-30 minutes.
  • Calibrate once and forget it: I spent a weekend dialing in e-steps, temperature, and retraction. I haven't touched settings since. A calibrated printer is a happy printer.

If you have a printer collecting dust, try fixing one broken thing around the house this weekend. It doesn't matter if it looks ugly — the feeling of not having to buy a replacement is addictive.
